B.Tech, abbreviated as Bachelor of Technology, is a professional engineering under-graduate degree, awarded after completion of four years of study and research. Prestigious Indian institutes such as the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) offer this course. Some private colleges that are affiliated to Indian Universities also offer engineering degrees under the name of B.E (Bachelor of Engineering). Although the names are different, but curriculum is the same, which has been laid down by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) and the University Grants Commission, India (UGC).



It is often misunderstood that B.Tech and B.E degrees are different from each other in the scope and value that they offer. Both the degrees are same in terms of scope and value. The Universities that offer science and humanities along with engineering courses have named the engineering course as B.E., while the Universities that offer only engineering courses have named their course as B.Tech. Technically both B.E and B.Tech are more or less same, except for these minor differences.
B.Tech offers huge opportunities to the students across the world. There are many areas that the student can specialize. Some of the areas always in constant demand are Computer Science, Electronics and Communication and Mechanical Engineering. With the increasing demand for software professionals in India, B.Tech in Computer Science remains to be one of the highest in demand. The scope exists not only within India, but also in many developed countries. Once a student successfully completes the course, he has the option either to study or to take up a job assignment, in India or abroad. If a student wishes to go for higher studies, the options are a plenty. One can go for Masters in Engineering or even study Masters in Business Administration. There are some Certificate courses also that students can pursue.

Many students prefer to pursue higher studies in foreign universities after completion of the B.Tech degree in India. The Universities in the United States and Europe offer specialized higher education, which provides the student a platform for building their professional career. These developed countries have integration with their industries, thus helping the student to get absorbed into the right job arena immediately on completion of their studies. Some students even get an opportunity to do their project work in these industries, while they are in the final year of their course. This gives them a wider chance to get absorbed into the same industry immediately on completion of the course.
With the rapid industrialisation in India, the scope of B.Tech will only increase. There is a good demand for quality engineers, especially from pioneer institutions, to serve in various positions in the industry. With the “Start-up India” initiative the scope for B.Tech in India will only increase. Technological advancements will always pose good opportunities for bright students. Therefore, B. Tech continues to remain as one of the most sought-after courses in India.

Engineering has always been one of the most aspired professional degree courses in India. One of the reasons is the rapid industrialisation that has happened over the past few decades. This has opened up many avenues for employment generation, especially in the metropolitan cities. In the recent past many students have shown keen interest in taking engineering as their career as it offers them many job prospects.



There are numerous examinations conducted, both at the national and state level, for selecting the most talented students to join engineering  courses in the country. The top engineering  university  in the order of their preference has been the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), National Institute of Technology (NIT) and Birla Institute of Technology (BIT).

In addition to the national level entrance examinations, there is also state level entrance tests conducted for procuring admission into the colleges which are affiliated to sate universities. 


Every state has its own syllabus for these examinations. 
A recent trend in engineering education across the country is the emergence of deemed universities, which offer engineering courses. These deemed universities are autonomous in nature and are providing specialized courses in engineering, including many integrated courses based on the recent developments in the industries. 


Some of the top engineering universities in India are SRM University, Jawaharlal Nehru University and Dehradun Engineering University. These universities conduct their own entrance examinations for selecting candidates into their institution.


From an academic perspective, engineering is broadly classified into Core Engineering and Applied Engineering courses. Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science Engineering e.tc are Core Engineering Courses, while Mechatronics, E.E.E., I.T. and the like are Applied Engineering courses as they are a hybrid of two or more core subjects. There is an equally good demand for these applied courses today as the syllabus is designed based on modern day industrial requirements. An Engineering degree thus offers the student a plethora of opportunities in the future.
